Same principle whether the cannabis is dried or for vaping

Everyone has their favourite storage method: freezer, airtight bag, original packaging, with or without a humidity-control pack and so on. But what’s the best method for vaping products?

Though the extracts contained in a vaping cartridge are not in direct contact with the air, they are still sensitive to their surroundings. What’s more, a vape’s electronics increases the device’s fragility because temperature changes can damage the cartridge and adversely affect the battery’s performance.

A few simple actions can make all the difference. Proper storage is, first and foremost, about safety and respecting the product.

Learn our tips for storing dried cannabis.

Cannabinoid degradation

Cannabinoids (THC, CBD, minor cannabinoids) and terpenes are sensitive to light, heat, oxygen and humidity. Extended exposure to these factors increases the risk of degradation and may affect the user experience.

That’s why it’s important to store cannabis products in a stable environment. This lets you protect the cannabis’s active ingredients and limit the risk of contamination, so the characteristics of each strain continue to come through with every use.

The optimal humidity level for storing vapes is between 45 and 65%.

Avoid humidity

Moisture is the enemy of electronic devices. Prolonged exposure to high humidity can not only damage your vape by causing short circuits but also alter the composition of the vaping liquid. What’s more, it opens the door to bacterial growth and changes the viscosity of liquid extracts, which can result in blockage and leaks.

To protect your devices and products, monitor the humidity level in the areas where they’re stored. Basements, attics and bathrooms often see wide variations in humidity. Adjust the ventilation or use a dehumidifier as needed. Even locations that might seem less risky, like near a dishwasher or a faucet, can expose your devices to potentially harmful humidity.

We recommend storing your products in a stable environment with a relative humidity of between 45 and 65%. Simply controlling the humidity helps extend the life of your products and ensure a safer vaping experience.

The optimal storage temperature for vapes is between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius.

Opt for a moderate, stable temperature

Neither too hot nor too cold, a temperate environment protects the quality of the extract and helps keep your device working properly.

Excessive heat can alter the cannabinoids and terpenes and make the vaping liquid more fluid, which increases the risk of leaks and can complicate inhalation. Conversely, excessive cold can make the extract thicker, slowing its transformation into an aerosol and placing unnecessary stress on the electronics.

To avoid these problems, choose a location protected from sources of extreme heat and cold, such as radiators, household appliances or inside a car. Ideally, you should store your vape at between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius (60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit), a range that maximizes the extract’s chemical stability and the device’s performance.

It's also important to avoid sudden temperature changes. If your device is too hot or cold, let it gradually return to room temperature before using it. This will help prevent condensation and keep the extract flowing properly.

The optimal storage position for vapes is upright.

Store it upright

A good habit to adopt to extend the life of your vape is to store it upright. Doing so helps avoid several common problems, including leaks, unpleasant tastes and operating issues.

Storing a vape on its side for extended periods increases the risks of leakage through the mouthpiece. Any leaked liquid can seep into porous surfaces and stain fabrics, bags and furniture. The wick can also dry out, resulting in a bitter, irritating taste, known as a “dry hit,” the next time the device is used.

Chose a stable location where there’s no risk of the vape falling over – in a small glass, for example, a long or narrow container or the original packaging.

By storing it upright, with the mouthpiece pointing upward, you help ensure the wick stays moist, the liquid remains stable and the device functions properly. Upright storage also reduces the risks of blockage and waste.

Store cannabis vapes in a safe place.

Store it in a safe place

Proper storage is not only about maintaining the product’s quality. It also makes everybody safer.

After each use, turn off your vape and, if it has a lock function, turn it on to avoid accidental startups.

Be sure to keep all vaping products out of the reach of children and pets. These products contain active substances that may be hazardous if handled, inhaled or ingested. If you don’t have access to an inaccessible place, protective cases with a latching mechanism or combination lock may provide an effective solution.

Store your cartridges and devices away from everyday food. To avoid confusion, you should ideally keep them in their clearly labelled original packaging.

Lastly, never use a battery that’s damaged, swollen or leaking. Such batteries should be disposed of safely at a designated drop-off point.

Taking the time to properly store your products is a way to protect those around you as well as your device and the user experience.

Store your vapes away from sources of light.

Protect it from light

Prolonged exposure to light, whether from the sun or indoor lighting, can alter the chemical composition of the cannabis extract in the cartridge and damage the vape’s battery.

UV radiation accelerates the degradation of cannabinoids, such as THC, which loses potency. UV radiation may also alter the aroma profile and deteriorate some of the terpenes. Also, heat and light in combination can liquify the cannabis extract, which could lead to leaks, deposits or blockage.

But sunlight doesn’t damage only the vaping liquid. It can also damage the vape’s battery. Prolonged exposure to the heat or direct rays of the sun risks increasing the battery’s internal temperature, which can interfere with its performance, accelerate wear and, in some cases, result in overheating.

To extend vaping products’ lifespan, store them away from light in a dark, temperate place, such as a drawer, cabinet or storage case. Opaque containers and UV-shielded packaging are useful for blocking light and extending the life of your products and device.

Long-term storage

Storing your cannabis vaping products for long periods requires taking a few additional steps to preserve their quality and safety. Even if cannabis products don’t come with an official best-before date, vaping liquids can deteriorate over time. A change in colour, odour or viscosity can be signs of degradation. In case of uncertainty, better to err on the side of caution and replace the cartridge.

Before putting away your products, make sure the battery is fully charged and the device is clean. Gently clean the connection point and mouthpiece with a dry cotton swab or one that’s lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), to remove any residues that may have built up.

Though often used to preserve dried cannabis, freezing is not recommended for vaping products. It can cause condensation, increase the risk of leaks and deteriorate the extract.
