In the wide and varied world of cannabis accessories, rolling papers remain one of the most common, largely because they’re also one of the simplest: you just put ground cannabis flower in a cannabis rolling paper and roll it up.
There are many types of rolling paper. From the raw material to the size, not to mention the shades of colour and the question of bleaching, each aspect influences the paper’s quality and the user’s experience. This article explores the various aspects of this cannabis accessory.
The most common materials used to make rolling papers are wood pulp, flax leaves, rice leaves and hemp leaves.
The origins of the word “blunt” go back to the Caribbean in the mid-18th century. As originally defined, blunts, which became popular in the States in the 1980s, are cannabis joints in which the rolling paper is replaced by a tobacco leaf. In addition, blunts usually have a bigger circumference – are bigger around – than regular joints.
Because they contain nicotine, blunts can’t be sold in Canada. However, the accessory industry does produce blunt-sized papers made from nicotine-free hemp leaves.
Rolling papers come in a wide variety of colours and patterns. The colour depends mainly on the raw material used, though various treatments, like added flavours and printed patterns, can have an effect on the product’s final colour.
Some rolling papers are bleached, which means they’ve undergone a chemical treatment to increase their porosity and slow the speed at which the paper burns. Bleached papers are usually white. The colour of unbleached rolling papers ranges from beige to brown.
Rolling papers usually come in the following sizes*:
*Give or take a few millimetres. Sizes may differ according to the maker.
