Société québécoise du cannabis: Store concept unveiled

Montréal, August 16 2018 – The Société Québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) today unveiled the first images of the stores that will open for business on October 17, the day the federal act comes into effect, in order to inform the public about the features that will be found in all the stores in the SQDC network.

First, as SQDC customers enter the point of sale, they will be greeted in the foyer by a security guard, who will allow only persons age 18 and over to enter the store. Interactive stations will be available for customers as soon as they arrive. The stations will provide advice on informed and responsible cannabis use and allow customers to start learning about the products available at the SQDC.

After passing the age check, customers will enter the heart of the store, where simple, educational displays and information counters will quickly provide complete details about the products on sale. The drawing released today makes clear the importance that the SQDC attaches to information, education and advice. Posters, literature and, of course, interaction with the advisors will inform customers about the risks associated with cannabis use, provide warnings and detail the available assistance resources in case of need. The 150 products stocked in SQDC stores will be displayed behind counters and customers will receive their purchase only once the transaction has been completed.

Also, to avoid promoting cannabis use and attracting members of vulnerable groups, SQDC storefronts will be clearly identified and will not allow passers-by to see the cannabis products in the store. As announced earlier, all SQDC stores will be located directly on streets in areas easily accessible by customers. The stores must be at least 250 metres from schools (150 metres for the city of Montréal).

The company is currently looking for full- and part-time employees who can work schedules that will enable the SQDC to provide service seven days a week. The SAQ plans to open around 20 stores across Québec in October, with others being added until 2020. Online sales will also be offered as soon as cannabis becomes legal, ensuring all of Québec is served from the start.
